eMarketingNews - Feb 2012 - Week 3
Released:  21/02/20122012-02-21

Welcome to this week’s addition of EMarketingNews. In this program: What is the fastest growing online ad format? What are the marketing implications of Google's Search plus your world? How do you optimise your B2B marketing strategy using online videos? We present ten Facebook Apps that will increase fan engagement AND How to upload your video to multiple sites at once? But first…

We will take a look at how branded TV channels have been shown to dramatically boost consumer engagement

Peter Middleton (News)
Following on from the YouTube phenomenon, brands have realised the importance of creating an online presence through YouTube channels and have met great success with exponential return on investment. Here are a few success stories – Marks and Spencer launched their YouTube Channel - Your M&S TV in 2009. Simon Wood – head of M&S online operations mentions that the channel has a view through rate of 10% - which means one in ten viewers visit the M&S on viewing the videos on their channel – which is significant for any online content marketing channel. He also mentioned that the visitors from their YouTube channel spent longer time on the site and looked at 3 times as many product pages as the site averages for visits to marksandspencer.com Online baby products retailers Kiddicare.com use their YouTube channel as products How-To manual. They do not have a high street presence; hence it’s more important for them to focus on customer engagement through all possible channels online. Chris Wood, video commerce manager at Kiddicare shares that Kiddicare customer care team has been using the YouTube channel as a tool for customer support and once pointed to the right video on the channel 90% of the customers received the product information they were looking for. Imagine the number of hours Kiddicare saves each month on customer support by this simple addition to their customer engagement portfolio! What is the fastest growing online ad format in the US? Believe it or not, it’s not search engine optimisation as most of us would have guessed. It’s video advertising! Still not convinced? Have a look at the spend projections table based on International Advertising Bureau data for next 5 years based on 2011 figures: More spend equals to a bigger piece of the online advertising pie for the video ads. The current market share stands at 7.9%, which is just a little more than that for Classifieds and Directories ads. But according to the projections, market share for video ads is expected to double in next 5 years! If you add in the spend on search and banner ads on content sites, it climbs to a staggering 80% of all the money spend on online advertising. Search remains steady at 50% of the market share for now, but the growth rate nosedives as seen in the table, as the search advertising reaches saturation point in years to come. What does that mean for your online advertising strategy? Well, trying out video advertising for your brand if you haven’t so already. Although the data is for the American market, here is a quick pointer why it is on the rise world over – when was the last time you watched a video on YouTube without a banner or pre-roll ad on it? Marketing Implications of Search Plus your World Moving on from Facebook to its closest competitors Google +. Recently Google launched ‘Search Plus your World’ or ‘search+’ The feature was launched to achieve deeper integration of Google+ and Google search, thus making search a more sociable experience. As a result the search results served on Google domains would be more personal and customised to the users signed in on their Google accounts when searching. Google will use the social data like posts from the user on Google+, what people in their circles or they themselves have commented on or +1ed (plus oned) etc. to be able to serve these ‘customised’ search results to users. Having large number of +1s for your site has deeper SEO implications for the website than ‘likes’ on Facebook as the number of +1s will be one of the parameters along with the search algorithm which will be considered whilst serving the search results for that particular user. Since information posted by brands and companies on Google+ will gain prominence in search results, brands can no longer ignore social media as a part of their online marketing strategy and may have to consider running their Google+ profile on the similar lines as onsite search engine optimisation for their websites, using the right keywords and fresh content. Search + is in beta stage right now, but soon to be released to everyone. The feature focuses on search, content and social media presence and can no longer be seen as different things. Hence managing the Google+ profile should be an integral part of your SEO strategy now. So make sure you add it to your agenda for your next meeting with your SEO team. Ref: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z9TTBxarbs&feature=player_embedded#! Optimising your B2B Marketing and Sales with Online Video YouTube overtakes Yahoo! as second largest search engine after Google! Volkawagon Darth Vader ad aired in commercial breaks for Superbowl XLV accounts for 20% of the total viewership figures for the series within 36 hours of launching the ad on YouTube! Salesforce’s YouTube video generates as many qualified leads for the business as 46 highly efficient sales representatives! How long can we just look at these bits of information as news? It’s time for you B2B marketers to take the bull by the horn and think about using online videos to optimise your integrated marketing campaigns. Studies have shown that 65% of us are visual learners and another 30% are audio learners, knowing that, popularity of video marketing doesn’t come as a surprise does it? Which works quite well for B2B marketers as video conveys more information per minute than any other form of advertising to help key decision makers reach the desired conclusion faster. More facts to reinforce this – MarketingSherpa claims online video to be the second most influential medium after word of mouth when it comes to making key decisions. Video marketing helps you engage the prospects every stage of the buying cycle, by helping you generate interest with viral videos in the initial stage, reinforce value proposition through product videos, testimonials etc . in the mid stage and helps gather vital customer information by sharing detailed case studies and videos at the later stage. Stay tuned as we come back with optimising tips from the industry experts for B2B marketers. Top 5 Facebook Apps to promote Fan Engagement Moving on from video ads to social media- Do you represent a business that has a Facebook fan page but has no flippin clue what to do with it other than posting updates about latest offers on it and putting links on your homepage to follow you on Facebook or do you have an aggressive social media marketing strategy? Whichever one you are – we have something for everyone on our list of top 5 Facebook Apps to promote fan engagement with your Facebook page. First up is Fan of the Week for Pages – Fans like to be recognised – this app helps you do exactly that. It keeps a track of fan participations and automatically posts a ‘shout out’ on Fan of the Week’s wall. Would you like to be proclaimed Fan of the Week to your favourite page – sure you do! Or would you rather publish a list of your top fans? The next app helps you do that too - Booshaka highlights the fans who actively participate on your page. Fans get points for posting on your wall, commenting on the posts or the likes. Booshaka also has a Top Fans Pro version to reward your top fans. That ought to keep them hooked on to your page! On the other hand, if you have a company blog and would like the latest blog post to be automatically posted on your page wall, the next app is the one you are looking for. NetworkedBlogs is one of the most popular third-party posting applications which help you leverage your blog activity on social media. Are you planning to go on a holiday without having a break in your Facebook page activity? You can do that now using Post Planner. Unlike all the competitor apps available for Facebook, Post Planner enables you to schedule posts with images and videos too! The app comes at a miniscule cost of $4.95 a month, but considering the benefits, it’s totally worth it. How about integrating your YouTube channel activity with your Facebook fan page? That way, visitors to your page can access all the videos on your channel without having to juggle between windows. There are many competitor applications out there, but we recommend YouTube for Pages by Involver purely for the ease of use. Upload your video to multiple sites at once Wow your new online video looks great! Now it’s time for it to go viral…but hang on – you don’t plan on putting it up on YouTube, Dailymotion and blip.tv, share it on your FaceBook fan page and put a tweet out to tell everyone about it; one thing at a time right? Well if you are, you are doing too much admin work! Here’s a simple one click solution to upload it once and distribute it to all the above channels at once. Oneload is a video distribution service for brand advertisers and online content creators to seed their videos across all social media and video channels at once. To help all kinds of businesses their services are tiered as Business, Business Pro and Enterprise levels to help you choose just the right level for you. Powered by parent company TubeMogul, a media buying platform for video advertising, OneTube also comes with a powerful analytics tracking and reporting add-on that helps you measure your content’s success across various channels accurately. Their testimonials section boasts a clientele from the likes of MacWorld,TechCrunch, CBS Interactive and more… For more information visit their website at www.oneload.com Well that's all for this edition of eMarketingNews, if you would have any news that would interest the 20,000+ marketing professionals who view this channel email us at editorial@emarketingnews.tv and add this address top your press release circulation list. Facebook is important for video marketing: http://bit.ly/social_video - We interviewed social media marketing expert, Mari Smith, about what we like to call "social video marketing" - and online video marketing and social media marketing relate to one another.

Also, Mari is the co-author of a great new book titled, "Facebook Marketing, An Hour A Day" - http://amzn.to/facebook-video-marketing - part of the same series as Greg Jarboe's book, "YouTube Marketing, An Hour A Day." - http://amzn.to/youtube-marketing - I highly recommend reading both of these books.

Here is a partial transcript of our interview, about social video marketing, with Mari Smith:

"Video really ties into social media because with the prevalence of social media, we've really come to expect to be in relationships with people. We look and see avatars, and our DNA is programmed to recognize faces. But, the thing is, no amount of (and I've said this for many years, that), no amount of sophisticated technology is going to ever take the place of real, live, in-person, eye-to-eye, belly-to-belly, when you can feel a person's energy, you can make eye contact with them, you can shake their hand, you can read their body language. But I'll tell you what -- the next closest thing, is video. Because with video, you can look in the camera, you can make contact with the person, you can really be intimate and feel much more connected. The viewer can (and the person recording the video) -- with the presence of webcams, and the prevalence of web chat apps... you have video chat like TinyChat.com, where you have, like, twelve simultaneous people chit-chatting, talking into their webcams, it's massive! I think video is an integral part of social media.

Video doesn't always have to be a person talking into the camera. Video can be, as I say, interviews. You can even take some slides and narrate the slides, and you got a video product.

You could do interviews, you could even -- I mentioned before about TinyChat -- you could screen record that with an app called Screenflow (for Macs) which I use and love. Or, Camtasia Studio by Techsmith. And so you're capturing the screen, and you can edit it to your heart's content until you get it right. You can actually make video tutorials... capturing the screen, you seen your mouse moving around like... for me, I do Facebook tutorials and they actually see my screen and I can move in. And that's an element of video."

Google Plus is Google's new social network. But why start a Google Plus account when you already have a Facebook account? Well, Facebook was developed on the premise that everyone is your "friend" which isn't how your social circles work in real life. Google plus is built so that you can intuitively break up all your connections into "circles" and treat each circle separately. (Facebook allows you to do some of the same things but the privacy settings are confusing and constantly changing.)

Google Plus has a lot of slick features, but the biggest reason to open a Google Plus account is that if you use a lot of Google products you will inevitably get one some day.

Google+ YouTube Integration: I Just discovered this morning (thanks to @VideoLeadsOnline) that you can now more easily share your own youtube videos on Google+. They still have not implemented automatically notifying people on Google+ of your YouTube videos (which is beyond me why you can autoshare on Orkut, but not Google+... anyway).. This is a step in the right direction and we hope to see more.

"YouTube SEO" - In this video we discuss YouTube SEO and Video Optimization -- how to optimise your YouTube videos and your YouTube channel. You can expect to get a lot of traffic from YouTube and Google is you optimise correctly and what I want to do in this video is show you my 5 Step Formula I use whenever I create a video to enable me to get a lot more views, to be shared and "go viral" and also get a lot more traffic back to my website.

Now the first step is KEYWORDS. Now, there is a lot of software out there to help, something I use on a regular basis is the Google Keyword Tool -- just Google it and you'll find it. You can then work out what keywords you want to target -- keywords that are relevant and profitable (not fr*ee tips for example). So work out what your keywords are that are going to help you target those because that's what's going to help you get a ton of traffic. The tip here is to choose a keyword that has low competition and high search volume. That's really important as that's going to help you rank on the first page of Google and on the first page of YouTube.

The 2nd step is about creating real high-quality CONTENT. So what you're creating your videos think about your best and most valuable tips that you can give to people because you're much more likely to be shared then. Video is much more likely to go viral as people share video and as a result if you can share some awesome tips on what you're discussing, people will share it with people they know and as a result you start getting a lot more traffic as well. So this is another great tip -- make sure the quality of the content is always top notch.

Next, make sure you're always building your COMMUNITY. The more subscribers and friends you have on YouTube, the better your YouTube Channel will be ranked. YouTube and Google are really looking for this and when your YouTube Channel page rank goes up, all of your video rankings will go up too. This means you can create just one subsequent video, optimise it just for the keywords and you're immediately get straight to the top of YouTube as YouTube will get to trust you for the high quality content and that's what they are looking for. YouTube are not necessarily looking for the longevity of anyone's content, they are looking for fresh content. And this is what's really useful for you and I -- when we create a video we can expect to be on the first page of Google and YouTube (see the proof), especially when we've targeted the keywords correctly. That's really important -- always make sure you're building your community.

Next... BACK LINKS. Now, we're talking about "do follow" back links and this is where we get other websites to embed our videos or talk about you and create content that links back to our 'stuff'. If you can get the anchor text (the words within the copy that are active links back to our information), to be our keywords and linked back to your VIDEO... Something that people rarely do -- if you can get those back links back to your channel or video, that's going to be really helpful for your Channel page rank and again your videos will go up the search page rankings again -- both on the first page of Google and the first page of YouTube. Really clever, powerful and a little sneaky! So make sure you implement that tactic!

Final step? REGULAR videos. A lot of people think, "Well if I create a load of videos all on 1 day and upload them all on 1 day that will be great!" - this is not a good strategy. What you want to do instead is leak it out over time -- instead of releasing your videos all on one day, just make sure you release one video one day and another video the next day and keep it regular. The reason being is because YouTube look at you as a Channel. Your viewers are actual people (yes, I know!) and people don't want loads of content all on 1 day -- you want to be trickling it out on a regular basis because this is what's going to be much more enjoyable and much more engaging for your viewers.

So, that's the 5 strategies -- make sure you've got your KEYWORDS sorted, make sure you're creating quality CONTENT, make sure you're constantly building your COMMUNITY, getting BACK LINKS and bringing out REGULAR content. These are 5 tips that are really useful for you if you're looking to create videos that go straight to the top of YouTube and Google. This will definitely help you get a lot more views, get a lot more traffic and as a result become a lot more successful.

There are several services that let you customize the YouTube player's embed code and the actual YouTube player itself. This week for our Creator's Tip we give you a look at five such services, all varying in levels of complexity and different options that they provide.

HOW TO ADD CHAPTERS TO YOUR VIDEOS IN YOUTUBE One of the services we cover this week lets you add chapters and scene sections to your video if you use their embeddable player, but you can do something similar directly in YouTube by just typing the timestamp into the description. YouTube will automatically hyperlink it to that point in the video.

1. LINKEDTUBE.COM - 0:43 This is the most simple and basic of the bunch, letting you add a clickable title to your video's player that links to any URL you provide, including your website, Facebook page, or an affiliate link.

2. VIEWBIX.COM - 1:40 This service does the same thing, but offers several other options including the ability to embed your RSS feed into the YouTube player along with your Twitter feed, Facebook pictures, and much more.

3. EMBEDPLUS.COM - 3:07 This player lets you add chapter markers and scene settings to your YouTube videos so viewers can easily jump between multiple segments of your video. This is especially helpful for longer videos, news videos, and tutorial videos that might want to allow viewers to easily skip to the next step in the video.

It also lets you add annotations to your videos that include clickable links to external URLs that point outside of YouTube, like to your website, Facebook page, affiliate link, or anything else.

4. YOUTUBE PLAYER API - 4:43 YouTube actually offers an API that lets developers customize the YouTube player and embed code with maximum flexibility. Thankfully, you don't have to be a developer to play with the YouTube Player API Demo they've setup, which you can find here: http://rseo.co/yBoZPK

5. FULL-BLOWN CUSTOMIZATION - 5:29 For those who are brave enough to dive in to it, here's a tutorial explaining how you can setup your own custom YouTube player for your website: http://rseo.co/wKTjJ5
